Crochet cube decoration with lights

There have been many photos of crocheted decorations with lights in them this Christmas. Most are balls or stars, so I decided to make a cube! These can be hung on a window, Christmas tree or anywhere in your decorated home.

You can make one using any kind of squares, even granny squares. I decided to use simple lace that is crocheted back and forth.

Pattern

You need 3 full squares for the cube and 3 squares that have a corner missing so you can get the lights into it. I used LED light wire with small batteries. The wire is easy to shape. But any kind of battery lights are fine, as long as the battery case is small enough to fit through the hole.

I crocheted the cube in white 6-ply crochet thread and hook size 1.75 mm. This makes each side of my cube to be 9 cm (3½ in). The size, of course, depends on the yarn you use as well as how tight you crochet.

Written instructions below the charts.

Start with 37 chain stitches. Make 3 pieces from each chart.

Instructions:

Make 3 full squares:

Chain 37.

Row 1: Tr to 9th ch from hook, ch 3, tr to same ch as previos tr, *ch 1, skip 4 stitches of starting chain, tr, ch 3, tr to same ch as previos tr*, repeat from * to * 4 times, ch 2, tr to 1st stitch of starting chain. Turn work.
Row 2: Ch 4, 1 cluster of 3 loops (cl, see above in Symbols), *ch1, cl*, repeat from * to * 5 times, ch 2, dc to chain below. Turn work.
Row 3: Ch 6, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop, *ch 1, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop*, repeat from * to * 4 times, ch 2, tr to chain below. Turn work.
Rows 4, 6, 8 and 10: Like row 2
Rows 5, 7, 9 and 11: Like row 3
Note that there is no row of clusters at the end. This is so that the square will be easier to join to other squares.

Make 3 squares that have a hole in the corner for inserting the lights:

Rows 1-8: like in full square
Row 9: Ch 6, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop, *ch 1, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop*, repeat from * to * 3 times, ch 2, tr to chain below. Turn work. ( In other words, you make one set of trebles less and turn back earlier.
Row 10: Ch 4, cl, *ch1, cl*, repeat from * to * 4 times, ch 2, dc to chain below. Turn work.
Row 11: Ch 6, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop, *ch 1, tr to middle loop of cluster, ch 3, tr to same loop*, repeat from * to * 3 times, ch 2, tr to chain below.

Harden the 6 pieces for cube using white glue mix. This video shows how to use glue for hardening:

Cube parts drying after being dipped in white glue:

After the pieces are completely dry – overnight at least – either sew or crochet them together. I crocheted them using silver crochet thread. I used single crochets with one chain in between. You can also use transparent thread if you don’t want the stitches to show.
